What is the Vivendi Seve Trophy?

Thanks to CANAL+ EVENTS’ initiative, the Vivendi Seve Trophy was created through a close collaboration with the European Tour, in order to reformat the tournament, and bring innovation and originality.

Colin Montgomerie

The 2011 edition will be held on the same course that made the success of the 2009 tournament, on September 15-18.

The first edition of the Vivendi Seve Trophy, listed on the European Tour schedule, took place from 24 to 27 September 2009 at the composite course at Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, with two experienced captains, selected by the Rider Cup captain Colin Montgomerie. Denmark's Thomas Björn led the team from Continental Europe, whilst Irishman Paul McGinley skipped the 10 players from Great Britain & Ireland

Organized by CANAL+ EVENTS, the Vivendi Seve Trophy is played every 2 years (starting in 2009), alternately with the Ryder Cup, and opposes the best players from Continental Europe to the elite from Great Britain and Ireland. Through this tournament, CANAL+ EVENTS and Vivendi are committed to the European Tour for four years, in order to offer France a major new international golf meeting, promoting the most spectacular, galvanizing golf form: team competition and Match Play.

The Vivendi Seve Trophy is held alternately with the Vivendi Cup (from 2010), an official event on the PGA European Tour.

Format

The Vivendi Seve Trophy pits European top golfers against each other in a team-based competition, with a format similar to the Ryder Cup, with a few differences. First, the Vivendi Seve Trophy is played over four days, not three. It also introduces the greensome, which does not exist in the Ryder Cup.
The two teams of ten players representing Continental Europe or Great Britain and Ireland will compete over four days, with five fourballs on the Thursday and Friday, four greensomes on the Saturday morning, four foursomes on the Saturday afternoon and ten singles on the Sunday
A total of 28 points will be awarded, with 14 ½ needed to win.

Each player plays against one opponent
